Fen Group Go Where Others Fear to Tread!

RSPB Minsmere is probably the highest profile reserve operated by the Charity and a regular host of the BBC’s Spring Watch series of television programmes

Fen Group were delighted to win a two year contract to help the RSPB improve the habitat of the reserve in order to encourage existing  Bittern numbers  to increase, and strengthen  the UK population of this rare wetland bird.

The difficulty of achieving the challenging specification required by the RSPB was further illustrated by the fact that most of the other contractors invited to tender for the work declined to submit a tender, which was a bit worrying!

Working deep within a large and unstable reed bed was always going to be a high risk operation, but with good planning and the utilisation of the Fen Group’s extensive experience and specialist plant adapted to suit these conditions, phase one of the work has now been completed with great success.

Work so far has included the restoration of drainage channels within the reserve and also the lowering of the bed of the reed bed in certain areas to create open water features which should be attractive to the Bittern as feeding areas.

Phase two of the project will continue later this year after the nesting season.
